The statement he shared, apparently from Mr Aslin, said: “48 days have passed, we have tried to defend Mariupol, but we have no choice but to surrender to Russian forces. We have no food and no ammunition. It was a pleasure for everyone, I hope this war ends soon. “
The spokesman said they shared the message after consulting with Mr Aslin’s family. “I hope for an exchange of prisoners,” it said.
Mr Aslin also fought in Syria with the Kurdish YPG militia. River O’Mahony Haag, who was a combat medic there, shared a message on Instagram, apparently from a source in Ukraine.
“Please pray, please,” the statement said, adding that Mr Aslin’s unit had “no choice but to surrender.”
