Call them prisoners, they said in prisons in repression of the words “awakening” | News

Prison managers and staff have been ordered to stop calling prisoners residents, customers or service users amid fears that “awakened” language is undermining public confidence in the criminal justice system.

Dominic Raab, the Minister of Justice, sent a new style guide to all prison and probation staff on the language they should use. Management instructs them to avoid using the word “room” when referring to cells.

Those released from prison should not be called “service users” or “clients”, but “those who have left prison, people leaving prison, people moving to the community and former offenders”.

Government sources said Raab was determined to end such use of “awake” language. They said the conditions were ridiculed and “damaged public confidence”.
