The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced a new recommendation for all persons aged 2 and over to wear masks “in closed areas of public transport (such as airplanes, trains, etc.) and transport centers (such as airports, train stations, etc.). ). ” The CDC also encourages people to carry “in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, such as airport planes.”
The announcement comes just over two weeks after a U.S. district judge in Florida ruled that the CDC’s mask mandate exceeded its authority. The Ministry of Justice said it planned to appeal the decision if the CDC indicated it was necessary.
The week before the court ruling, the CDC extended the mask requirement to today. However, the last message comes as a recommendation, not a mandate, which means that there is no force of law. For now, local authorities can decide whether they want to comply or not.
Cases and hospitalizations have begun to increase in the United States as new, more portable options spread in waves. BA.2 began managing cases last month, quickly becoming dominant across the country. An even more portable Omicron BA.2.12.1, first identified in the US in February, is about to push out BA.2. Data released today shows that BA.2.12.1 now accounts for 36.5% of all new consecutive positive tests for Covid, which have jumped nearly 100% in the last two weeks.
The credibility of the CDC could be tested again as cities like New York moved into what federal health officials called the middle or yellow risk category for transmitting the virus. (The current categories are much more lenient than they were last year.)

There are nearly 2,500 new cases a day in New York, a large increase from 600 daily cases in early March. If New York and other regions go red or high, it could lead to a return to public health restrictions, such as camouflage. In fact, many areas in the northeast are already in the red. See the map below.

The Associated Press reports that, based on CDC data, “half of Vermont’s 14 counties are already rated as having high levels of COVID-19 in the community.” The largest city in Burlington ended its mandate for an indoor mask only last month. There seems to be little enthusiasm for the return of such mandates, either from the people of the region or from their elected officials.
