A 37-year-old man from Charlottetown is facing charges of attempted murder following an incident at the Outston Street Outreach Center on Friday afternoon.
In a news release Monday afternoon, Charlottetown police said they had responded to a complaint of an attack on the center.
Two men got into an argument in the building, the statement said, which escalated into a physical confrontation and one man stabbed the other. The victim received two minor stab wounds to the chest, police said, and the injuries necessitated medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The victim was released from QEH within a few hours.
The accused left the outreach center before officers arrived, police said, but he was found and arrested shortly afterwards.
A safety review is pending
The PEI’s Department of Social Development and Housing, which provides funding for the contact center, said proper procedures had been followed, but a safety review would be carried out in response to the incident.
“Systems and security measures at the Community Communication Center have been put in place to provide secure services, including: multiple security cameras, requiring customers to store belongings when they enter the center, and requiring staff to wear panic buttons to help with emergency responses, “, Said in a statement by email to the CBC.
Police said the accused, who is also accused of violating probation, is on remand in custody.
