Chris Caba was not pursued by police before he was shot, the inquest heard

On the evening of September 5, armed officers in an unmarked police car spotted an Audi parked in the Camberwell Green area of south London and went after it.

Mr Brown explained: “The officers did not activate their lights or sirens while following the vehicle. The intention was to use Audi’s “force stop extraction”.

“At around 10.07pm Mr Kabba made a left turn from New Park Road into Kirkstall Gardens. There was already a marked police armed response vehicle at Kirkstall Gardens.”

Mr Dean said the armed officers got out of their cars and approached the Audi.

He continued: “The evidence suggests that there was contact between the Audi driven by Mr Kaba and the police cars.

“The evidence further suggests that Constable NX121 was standing in front of Mr Kaba’s vehicle. A single shot was fired by Officer NX121, which pierced the windshield of the vehicle driven by Mr. Kaba and struck him.

The inquest was adjourned to allow the investigation to continue.

Speaking outside the hearing, Mr Caba’s cousin, Jefferson Bosella, urged the IOPC to conclude its investigation as soon as possible.

Joined by Mr Cabal’s mother, Helen Lumuanganu and his father, Prosper Kaba, Mr Bossela said: “We need answers. Not only this family, but all of London – the whole country – must know how something like this could happen?

“How can a young man sitting in a car, unarmed, be shot in the head by the police in London in 2022?”

“This should never have happened. It must never happen again. We should never take this for granted. Someone has to be held accountable.”

He added: “An urgent decision on criminal charges is crucial for this family and many others to have faith in the system that should bring them justice.”
