The City of Kelowna is asking residents to avoid Water Street and the area of the Kelowna Wastewater Treatment Facility while crews respond to a pump failure.
According to the city, the situation is under control, with the spillway under control and cleanup underway at the lift station site at 1831 Water Street. There was no service disruption for local residents and businesses.
“Seven vacuum trucks carry wastewater from the lift station to the Kelowna wastewater treatment facility, and as a result, wastewater levels are reduced,” Utilities Manager Kevin Van Vliet said in a news release. “A replacement pump has been located and crews will be working around the clock to get it in place.”
Runoff into nearby Mill Creek has been stopped and water quality testing of the creek is underway.
The Department of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has been alerted and the city has said it will work with them to understand and address any impacts on Mill Creek and the environment.
The cause of the pump failure and the amount of sewage flowing into Mill Creek is currently unknown and will be investigated once water quality testing is done and the lift station can be drained and analyzed.
The Water Street Lift Station outage will not affect service to Kelowna homes.
Water Street near the Kelowna Wastewater Treatment Facility is currently open to traffic, but traffic is being controlled.
