LAS VEGAS (AP) – The body found inside a barrel on the newly discovered bottom of Lake Mead, after the level of the lake was depleted amid drought, is that of a man who was shot, police said on Tuesday.
The murder probably took place between the mid-1970s and early 1980s, because the victim was wearing shoes made during that period, said homicide lieutenant Ray Spencer, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The barrel was found Sunday in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area by boatmen, authorities said.
Drought has lowered the water level in Lake Mead on the Colorado River in southern Nevada and northern Arizona so much that last week saw the highest water intake in Las Vegas.
Lake Mead and Lake Powell upstream are the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States, part of a system that provides water to more than 40 million people, tribes, agriculture and industry in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and across the southern border of Mexico.
The Clark County Judicial Service will try to establish the man’s identity.
