Ontario health officials reported 1,734 people in hospital with COVID-19 and 22 new deaths related to the virus on Wednesday.
This marked a slight increase in hospitalizations compared to Tuesday, when 1,730 patients were reported.
Of Wednesday’s hospitalizations, 225 patients were unvaccinated and 1,076 fully vaccinated. The vaccine status of the remaining patients is unknown.
Forty-five percent of patients treated for COVID-19 in a hospital on Wednesday were admitted to COVID-19, while the remaining 55 percent tested positive after uncoordinated use. In intensive care units these percentages are 66% and 34% respectively.
Of the Ontario patients currently being treated for COVID-19 in the intensive care unit, 29 were unvaccinated and 112 were fully vaccinated. The vaccine status of the remaining patients is unknown.
Officials also reported 22 new deaths in the last month due to COVID-19.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 12,772 people have died from the disease.
With 23,230 tests processed in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health says the percentage of positive results in the province is about 15 percent.
The province reported 3,005 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, but health officials warned that the number was a significant underestimation due to limited testing and lag.
Last week, Ontario’s chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, said he was a “cautious optimist” that virus-related hospitalizations were expected to peak in the coming days.
Today’s report brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases in Ontario to 1,249,018.
