Ontario confirmed 16 more deaths from COVID-19 and nearly 1,700 hospitalizations on Tuesday.
The health ministry says 15 of the latest deaths have occurred in the past month, and one death has been added to the total due to data cleansing.
Two of the dead were placed in long-term care homes.
As of March 2020, the province has reported 12,858 virus-related deaths.
Health officials say there have been 1,699 patients with the virus in Ontario hospitals in the past 24 hours, a significant increase from 1,423 the day before. However, it should be noted that some hospitals do not provide data over the weekend.
One week ago, the ministry reported 1,730 hospitalizations with COVID-19.
Forty-two percent of the currently hospitalized patients were admitted for COVID-19-related reasons, while 58 percent were admitted for other reasons but subsequently tested positive for the virus.
Among the patients, 202 are in intensive care, nine less than yesterday and 17 less than a week ago.
The ministry says 65% of patients in the intensive care unit were admitted with the virus, while 35% were taken to hospital for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.
In the last 24 hours, the provincial laboratories have processed 11,755 tests, giving a positive test rate of 13.2 percent, unchanged from a week ago, according to the ministry.
Officials confirmed another 1,547 infections today, but the daily number of cases continues to be underestimated due to limited access to PCR testing.
In recent cases, 952 of the individuals received three doses of vaccine, 251 received two doses, 199 were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and 145 had unknown vaccination status.
More than 22,000 COVID-19 vaccines were given in the province yesterday.
To date, 90% of Ontario residents aged five and over have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 86% have received two doses, and 52% have received three doses.
The numbers used in this story are in the Ontario Department of Health’s daily epidemiological summary COVID-19. The number of cases for each city or region may differ slightly from that reported by the province, as local units report figures at different times.
