David Letterman took to the stage for the Netflix Is a Joke Festival event on Friday and appears to have responded to the recent attack on Dave Chapel in the Hollywood Bowl.
Letterman hosted a live comedy show at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles, which also featured comic book colleagues Rosebud Baker, Phil Wang and Sam Morrell. Earlier in the evening, the longtime CBS protagonist thanked the audience for attending and then apparently mentioned how Chappelle was attacked on Tuesday night at a various Netflix event Is a Joke.
On Saturday, Netflix shared footage from social media from Letterman’s show, and the streaming service titled the video “David Letterman about the incident with Dave Chapel”, although the video does not include him mentioning Chapel by name.
In the video, the 75-year-old star can be seen adjusting her glasses, suddenly looking startled and running away from the stage. After regaining his composure, Letterman joked, “I’m sorry – I thought I saw a man coming here.” Then he pretended to listen to someone in the audience and said, “Is this just a waiter? So sorry. It was just a little worrying – do you understand what I mean?
Letterman went on to say, “Out of respect for the people who come here, let me just say this: When the show is over, I’ll be in the lobby, and if anyone wants to come and beat me up, for God’s sake, come out.” ” He then pretended to raise his hands until he asked, “How many of you would like to hit me right now?”
Chappelle was speaking on Tuesday when a man stormed the scene, knocking him to the ground and pointing a copy of a firearm at the comedian, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. After the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that it had refused to prosecute criminal charges, the Los Angeles Attorney’s Office has filed four charges of wrongdoing against Lee.
During a secret set at the Comedy Store late Thursday, Chappelle turned to the incident, which came a day after his spokesman said the star would not allow the attack to “overshadow the magic” of his shows at the Hollywood Bowl.
