Heavy rains and floods hit the east coast of South Africa, killing hundreds of people while damaging homes and destroying roads.

The floods affected the province of KwaZulu-Natal, which includes the coastal city of Durban. The roads cracked and gave way to deep cracks. A huge pile of shipping containers collapsed in muddy waters. The bridge was swept away, leaving people stranded on both sides.

There has been extreme rainfall in KwaZulu-Natal since Monday. In a statement posted on Facebook, the provincial government called it “one of the worst weather storms in our country’s history.”

Teams are working to evacuate areas where they have suffered “mudslides, floods and structural collapses of buildings and roads,” Sifo Hlomouka, a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Executive Board for Joint Management and Traditional Affairs, said on Twitter.
