Death at work in Sudbury on Friday involved a municipal official

Statement issued by the City of Greater Sudbury expressing condolences to the worker’s relatives, but not giving the name of the person at the request of his family

Death at work, which occurred in Levak on Friday afternoon, involved an employee of the town of Greater Sudbury, confirmed the municipality in a press release this weekend. Initial information provided by the Greater Sudbury Police Department states that the death occurred in a sand and salt yard located in Levak.

The city issued a statement on May 7 confirming that the worker is a municipal employee. **

“Our hearts are broken by this tragic loss,” the statement said. “Our deepest sympathies are with family, friends and everyone who has known and worked with the employee. Our immediate focus is on supporting the staff members closest to this employee. “

The statements added that the municipality was working closely with the Greater Sudbury Police Department, the Coroner’s Office and the Department of Labor, Training and Skills to find out exactly what had happened. At the request of the family, the name of the employee and any identifying information will not be disclosed.

“The information we have is limited at the moment,” the city said in a statement. “Additional updates will be provided, if necessary, pending appropriate notification to relatives and staff and in line with the external investigation process.

Also Saturday, local 4705 of the Canadian Civil Service Union (CUPE) issued a statement of condolence.

“With great sadness, CUPE 4705 acknowledges the loss of one of our brothers in a tragic accident at work yesterday,” the CUPE Facebook page said.

“On behalf of the Executive Board and all 4705 brothers and sisters, our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family,” the statement continued.

** An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed the city’s statement to Ward 10 Coun. Fern Cormier. This has been corrected.
