Fire crews from all over Devon have dealt with three major incidents in the last 24 hours – fires that broke out at Dunxwell Airport, the Marsh Barton mansion in Exeter, and is now battling an ongoing fire in Ilfracombe.
In the latest fire, a large five-story Victorian building was destroyed, leaving an empty shell on Torrs Park Road, Ilfracombe. The flames tore the roof and now crews are struggling to save a neighboring apartment building. Live updates here. Residents said the roof disappeared 20 minutes after the fire was reported.
Earlier today, a large fire broke out at Sims Metal, a landfill at the Marsh Barton commercial property in Exeter.

On Thursday afternoon, the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Headquarters received numerous 999 calls from the public and staff at Dunxwell Airport near Honiton. Videos show thick black smoke consuming cars, gas cylinders and portacabins.
It is not yet known if there were any casualties in the Ilfracombe fire. A local resident said: “I really hope everyone is fine! At first I thought it was a fire, as it started quite small and the day was nice. But the smoke was getting thicker and blacker, and you could soon see flames licking. It solidified so quickly, and in about 20 minutes the roof was almost gone. It now seems to be spreading to the next building.
