Disappointed Pokémon Scarlet & Violet players are reportedly getting refunds

The ninth generation games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have been out for a week. They take the series in a bold new direction with an open-world design, but they also suffer from serious performance issues and glitches.

It seems all this (including Game Freak’s silence) has become too much for some trainers, with many now demanding refunds. According to a VGC story, players have had “mixed results” when requesting refunds for the Switch eShop, but there appear to be some success stories.

A thread that’s been blowing up on the Pokémon subreddit recommends that other players get a refund while they can, as Nintendo clearly knows how serious the problem is:

“I received a refund from the e-store last night for Violet after I felt the game was not in a state I would consider acceptable for a AAA release. The rep actually told me that given the situation regarding the condition of the Pokemon S/V, she would escalate my case to ensure the refund was approved… It was approved an hour later.

“The fact that the representative knew the issues I’m talking about means it’s getting attention.” It’s one of the few things Nintendo/GF will be forced to notice.”

Individual player reports via social media platforms also recommend a “one-off” refund. Some have even been advised to check out “third-party review sites” to learn more about Nintendo titles in the future, and others aren’t so successful…

Depending on your region, certain support teams seem to reject digital recovery requests. Here’s part of a response Twitter user @Skeffi__ received from the Nintendo Contact Center Europe team:

“We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulty with Pokemon Violet. We know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but for various reasons we are unable to offer refunds for Nintendo eShop content purchases. We’ve tried to make sure this was clear before the transaction, both in the agreement you accepted and on the screen immediately before completing the transaction…read the full text of the agreement for all our current systems…”

Here at Nintendo Life, we enjoyed our time in the Paldea area, but cited “technical issues” as a hindrance. Digital Foundry also shared its own technical analysis video this week, noting how Scarlet and Violet are “technical failures” and well below the technical standards set by previous entries.

Then there were all the problems… both funny and terrifying:

Despite all the technical issues, the new entries have already broken a number of records – becoming the best-selling game on any Nintendo platform in the first three days and selling over 10 million units worldwide. In Japan, the game also became the “biggest” game launch in the country.

The Pokémon Company and Nintendo haven’t provided an official response to the performance issues players are experiencing, but with any luck there’s at least a small fix or patch on the way to improving the situation. If we learn of any developments, we’ll let you know.

How has your time with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet been so far? Are the game’s technical issues causing any problems on your end, or are you having too much fun in the Paldea region to care? Leave a comment below.
