Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Saturday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
Both women lived in block 800 of Crittenden Street NW, said the head of the capital’s police department, Robert Conti.
Numerous people called police to report the shooting in the block, and officers responded around 6 a.m., Conti said.
A woman was found in a house. She has been shot at least once, Conti said. Her staff provided first aid and she was taken to hospital.
A second woman was on the front porch of another neighbor’s house. She was wearing a special police uniform showing a name that was not hers, Conti said.
She allegedly brandished a gun and smashed windows, according to Conti and a police statement.
Police tried to contact the woman for about a minute, including asking her to drop her firearm and get on the ground, Conti said. Police said she did not comply.
Washington police are shooting at the woman, Conti said. Officers provided first aid, but she was found dead on the spot. Her name was not released immediately.
The woman killed by police appears to have known the first victim of the shooting.
“They seem to know each other, but I’m not sure why the special police officer shot the other neighbor at this point,” Conti said.
Police are trying to determine if the woman killed by police is a licensed special police officer. The department keeps in touch with her family.
Special police officers are licensed by the city to provide services such as security work.
People in the neighborhood told News4 they had heard of five shots.
The area around the shooting was blocked for investigation, which included a review of footage from home security cameras.
Saturday’s shooting erupted in the city’s quadrant, already rocked by gun violence.
Four people were shot dead in a sniper attack in the Van Ness district on Friday afternoon. The 23-year-old suspect was found dead in an apartment building on Friday night, police said.
Three men were found shot dead later that evening on 7th Street and Kennedy NW in DC’s Brightwood Park neighborhood, less than a mile from the scene of a police shooting on Saturday.
All three were taken to hospitals conscious and breathing.
Asked on Saturday morning about the outbreak of violence, Conti praised the capital’s police department and said they may have prevented more people from being injured or killed in Van Ness and Crittenden Street.
“It’s hard to make sense of nonsense. We know that when it comes to firearms, this increases the security risk we face when we are here and doing our job. But men and women from the capital’s police department show up every day, “Conti said.
