The BBC throws the keys to the TARDIS at Nkuti Gatwa.
Gatwa (whose first name is Shoo-ti) received the iconic role of Doctor Who’s Doctor Who, making him the successor to Jody Whitaker and the 14th leading role in the series as a whole.
The show confirmed the news on Twitter on Sunday, writing: “The future is here! Nkuti Gatva is the doctor.
The Rwandan-born Scottish actor will be the first black actor to play a full-time role.
“There are no exact words to describe how I feel,” Gatva said in a statement. “A mixture of deeply revered, extremely excited and, of course, a little scared. This role and show means so much to so many people around the world, including me, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors handles this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do my best to do the same … Unlike the Doctor, I can only have one heart, but I give my all to this show. ”

“The future is here and this is Nkuti!” Added showrunner Russell T. Davis. “Sometimes talent comes through the door and it’s so bright, bold and brilliant, I just step back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Nkuti blinded us, grabbed the Doctor, and held those TARDIS keys for seconds … I’m sure you’re dying to learn more, but we’re splitting up now, with the beautiful Jody’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you that 2023 will be spectacular! ”
Gatva is currently portraying Eric Efiong in the British teen drama Netflix Sex Education. His other television credits include Stonemouth, Bob Servant and the upcoming Masters of the Air. He will also star in next year’s Barbie movie, a romantic comedy based on Mattel toys.
Dr. Koy originally aired from 1963 to 1989 on BBC One, starring William Hartnell, Patrick Trowton, John Pertwoy, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. The show was revived in 2005 and in its current form included Christopher Ecclestone (season 1), David Tennant (seasons 2-4), Matt Smith (seasons 5-7), Peter Capaldi (seasons 8-10) and Whitaker (seasons) 11-13), who went down in history as the first female doctor in the series.
Whitaker confirmed in July 2021 that he would retire as a Doctor after playing the role for three seasons; although season 13 ended airing in December 2021, Whitaker returned to play the Doctor in three feature-length special films that aired in 2022. The first two specials aired in January and April, while the premiere date for the third is still no specific ads. Showrunner Chris Chibnal also announced that his term would end when Whitaker did so, and Russell T. Davis – who was originally Doctor who showrunner, when the show resumed in 2005 – will take the baton for season 14.
