Don’t give elderly relatives the flu for Christmas, the Brits said News

Britons should avoid celebrating Christmas with grandparents if they have a cough or cold after a “dramatic” surge in winter viruses, health officials said.

Hospital admissions for flu are now at their highest for five years and health chiefs fear Christmas gatherings will expose vulnerable elderly people to the virus. Anyone who feels unwell is urged to stay home alone.

NHS bosses have said this Christmas could be the “darkest yet” as hospitals come under “enormous pressure” from patients hit by rising flu, coronavirus and strep A infections.

They said the resurgence of winter viruses was being “made worse” by a wave of strikes by nurses and paramedics, who yesterday announced two more days of walkout for January.
