OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Police have convicted George Merritu, a Republican candidate running for sheriff in Douglas County, of speeding.
According to a citation issued by Omaha police, around 9 a.m. Saturday, George Merritu was accelerated by 107 mph in the 65 mph zone of I-80 near 50th Street.
Merityu, 55, is a retired lieutenant in the Omaha Police Department. He is competing against a sergeant in Omaha police. Aaron Hanson in the Republican primary for the Douglas County Sheriff. The primary ones are on Tuesday.
According to the citation, the respondent said that the driver was wearing a “Merithew for Sheriff shirt and is on his way to the Cinco de Mayo parade in South Omaha.” The respondent also stated that he “was not aware of the identity of the driver of the vehicle or the owner of the vehicle before stopping the vehicle”.
The ticket, which comes with a $ 300 fine, states that Merityu drove a BMW 2020 convertible and had a young passenger.
The official wrote that Merityu showed him his retired Omaha police badge after asking if everything was correct in his license and vehicle documents.
