“Dozens” were killed and wounded after a rocket attack on Kramatorsk station

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the bloc’s top diplomat Josep Borel are on their way to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

Von der Layen tweeted a photo on Friday as he approached the train with Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger joining the trip.

“I look forward to Kyiv,” she said.

Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, also tweeted a photo of himself and von der Layen traveling.

According to Ukrainian presidential spokesman Sergei Nikiforov, the head of the European Commission will meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky “sometimes” on Friday.

The visit comes when the bloc approved its fifth package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday night, in particular by imposing a ban on imports of Russian coal.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told a NATO news conference in Brussels that the sanctions would signal “serious pressure” on Russia, although he complained about the bloc’s failure to focus on Russian oil and gas in the package.
