“Drive very slowly and carefully”; Another snow hit the Sierra during Mother’s Day trips – CBS Sacramento

COLFAX (CBS13) – On Mother’s Day, people driving through the Donner Summit needed more flowers for Mom after the chain’s controls took effect when the snow hit the Sierra.

Colfax saw a winter mix with mostly rain that came on and stopped during the day. So it was a surprise for some drivers traveling up the mountain to find snow and ice hitting their windshield.

“Yes, wait,” said Mark McNab, a Nevada resident. So, drive very slowly and carefully.

The Caltrans video shows a slump on the highways, creating slippery conditions. The wind was another concern for drivers, as it snowed, reducing visibility.

“The biggest thing: slow down,” said John Major, installer of the I-80 circuit east of Nyack.

Seth Hartigan of Nevada travels to see the family for Mother’s Day. When he returned home, he said he was caught unprepared without chains.

“My concern is that they will not let me go without them,” he said.

At one point, ice covered the area as snowdrifts created white bones in the Sierra.

“When I came back, it started at about 2 o’clock [with] waves, “said Dennis Donavan of Vacaville. He took his wife to Lake Tahoe for Mother’s Day weekend. “And then we got to the Donner Summit, it sucked.”
