Grumpy Hamilton of Lumpy Monaco
Charles Leclerc will start the Monaco Grand Prix in pole position as part of one or two Ferraris after an accident involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz stopped qualifying.
Perez pressed late in the session, but hit the wall when Sainz collided with a Red Bull driver. Leclerc, who was the fastest driver all weekend, made a brilliant lap in his home circuit right at the beginning of Q3.
Max Verstappen will start fourth, behind the rest of Sainz’s Ferrari and his Red Bull teammate Perez. Verstappen could not improve his time before the red flag, as the world champion was still out of pace this weekend.
The pole position is vital for Sunday’s race, as there is little opportunity to overtake around the Monte Carlo track. Leclerc also won a pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix last season, but failed to start the race after crashing at the end of the session.
“It’s so special,” Leclerc said. “I am just so happy. I knew the pace was in the car. I just knew I had to get the job done. ”
Lewis Hamilton will start eighth after the seven-time world champion failed to improve his time due to the red flag. He leaves Hamilton behind Lando Norris, George Russell and Fernando Alonso. Follow the live reaction to the qualification this afternoon in Monte Carlo:

Red Bull director Christian Horner has admitted that he does not think they could get a field, even if the red flag had not come out by the end of Q3.
He said: “I don’t think that pillar was put up today, Charles was strong.
“Congratulations to him for not being able to do it this time, but it’s unfortunate because I think both pilots could have improved a bit.
“Max was definitely much taller, but that’s one of those things. Checo was on it all weekend and it’s still P3 and P4, so it’s just one of those things and there may be some time tomorrow.
“It’s disappointing not to get one in the front row, but we will fight from there.”

Carlos Sainz reacted in second place in the grid and Ferrarita finished one or two. But he began by discussing this late crash with Sergio Perez, which led to the red flag and the end of the session.
He said: “Perez crashed in front of me and I was on my flying tour. I saw the yellow flag coming in turn 8, I had to apply the brakes and try to avoid it in the best way.
“It’s a shame that another red flag costs us the end of the session, so we can’t reach pole position, but that’s typical of Monaco.
“We thought we had a really good pace all day and we just built it for Quali. We will never understand and it is impossible to say, but I felt good.
“Let’s finish tomorrow, I think we’re in a good position to score for the team, the car was amazing all weekend, so we will do it.”

Charles Leclerc reacted to his excellent pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix.
He said: “It’s very special. I am so incredibly happy. So far it has been a very smooth weekend, I knew the pace was in the car and I just had to get the job done.
“It simply came to our notice then. The last lap before the Red Flag was really, really good. Anyway, that didn’t change anything for us. The car felt amazing and it’s great to have Carlos with me in the front row.
“Dry conditions are a little more predictable, but whatever happens, we are competitive, so we will recover.”
