Family members identify 1 in 2 workers killed in St. Paul’s trench collapse

Family members say Jeffrey Janet was one of the “best boys you’ve ever met” with the “biggest heart”.

A 66-year-old man from North St. Paul is one of two workers killed in a trench collapse on a construction site in St. Paul on Friday, his family confirmed on Sunday.

My family tells me that 66-year-old Jeffrey Janet of North St. Paul was one of two victims in Friday’s fatal trench accident at #StPaul.

His sons say he was “the best man you’ve ever met” and that he would give his shirt to anyone.

“[It] I feel like I’m asleep, “said Jason Janet, one of Jeffrey Janet’s sons. “I think we are all in shock. [It] it just hasn’t really come in completely. “

Firefighters in St. Paul say the collapse occurred just before 3pm on Block 700 on Mount Curve in the city’s Highland Park, and the two workers were trapped. A third worker outside the trench called 911.

One body was found around 9pm tonight; it took almost seven more hours to remove the second victim from the trench, according to the fire department.

Just two days later, on Father’s Day, Jason and his brother Joseph Janet say they plan to go fishing with their father over the weekend.

“He loved to work with vehicles, to fish, to do things with his hands [and] to be with our family, ”they told 5 EEEWITNESS NEWS.

“Enjoy your time with your loved ones – you never know when they won’t be there,” added Jason Janet.

The investigation into the deadly trench accident is still ongoing. On Sunday, the St. Paul Fire Department said there were no updates.

The family has created a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
