Firefighters are battling a large fire at a former church in West Dunbartonshire for the second time in a week.
St. Andrew’s Church in Alexandria was engulfed in flames on Saturday night with a huge stream of smoke rising in the sky over the city.
The fire broke out on Main Street around 7:29 p.m., and the road was closed by emergency services.
Two fire engines and a long-range device were mobilized, and more than an hour later firefighters are still putting out the blaze.
Church of St. Andrew, Alexandria, burning in flames. Twice a week, but this time it looks much worse. Strangely, it suddenly became a target for arson when the private owner found out they had a £ 1 million + repair bill to make it windy and waterproof. The building, which was closed as a place of worship in 1995, has been abandoned since 2012.
Last year, the charity Viresco Studios received a £ 750,000 grant from the Scottish Government’s Capital Recovery Grants Fund to turn the former B-list St. Andrew’s Church into a multifunctional arts and creative workspace. .
Emergency services were called in a previous fire in the Easter building.
West Dunbartonshire Council leader Jonathan McCall said Saturday’s fire looked “much worse” than last time.
He also said that the owners of the building are facing a bill for repairs of over 1 million pounds.
