Firefighters and staff battling fires at Calgary recycling depot

Witnesses noticed thick black smoke rising from the Ecco recycling plant in Quarry Park on Friday night, prompting a quick response from the Calgary Fire Department.

The CFD said it responded to the incident after receiving numerous smoke calls near witnesses throughout the southeastern community and on roads in the area.

Fire crews have arrived to find firefighters on the scene.

“A large bulldozer used by the staff of the fire station suffered mechanical damage, after which it was quickly overcome by fire. The operator managed to get out of the machine unscathed and withdrew to a safe place, “the CFD said in a statement.

“The fire quickly grew in size and volume, and fire crews were forced to intervene with remote water supplies and hose streams.”

The teams worked at night with staff to control the flames to a pile of materials believed to be construction waste and dry filler.

It is not known how long the firefighters will stay in the area, but authorities are advising the public to stay away for at least 24 hours.

No casualties were reported.

The recycling facility has experienced several fires in the past.
