A woman standing and shouting at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the Freedom Convoy protest has expressed remorse and will not be charged, Ottawa police said.
A video shows the woman standing on the tomb at the National War Memorial and shouting “freedom” on January 29. Police released photos and videos of the suspect in an attempt to identify her.
Police said Thursday that the woman has been identified, but no charges will be filed.
“She was interviewed, she showed remorse for her actions and the police are confident that she will not commit another crime,” police told CTV News. “She was treated differently, which is police practice.
Police say they did not disclose the woman’s name because no charges have been filed. He was said to live outside the province.
“Suffice it to say that the investigation of the woman who was videotaped, standing and shouting at the tomb of the unknown soldier, affected people across the country,” the statement said.
“Inspector Jim Elves, who is watching our criminal investigators, is a veteran himself and understands the importance of this sacred monument. All this, after an in-depth investigation and talks with several parties, OPS is pleased that this is an isolated incident that will not be repeated by this person. “
The video from the first weekend of what turned out to be a three-week occupation caused outrage. The Canadian Chief of Defense said he was “sick”, and Defense Minister Anita Anand called the behavior “beyond condemnation”.
Later, police placed a fence around the memorial to protect protesters until the end of the demonstration.
Police are preparing for another protest in the city center this weekend, with a Rolling Thunder demonstration expected to bring at least 500 motorcycles in the city.
Police have set up an exclusion zone that bans protesters, including the National War Memorial. However, people will be allowed to walk there. The Ottawa interim police chief said there were no plans to erect a fence around the memorial, but officers would be nearby.
