French live election results: Macron wins by defeating Le Pen

Macron thanked his supporters after winning the re-election offer

Emmanuel Macron has promised to be president “for all” in a victory speech after exit polls predicted his election victory.

Polls after Sunday’s vote show that about 58% of the vote was in favor of the current president, compared to 41% for the leader of the national rally, Marine Le Pen.

If predictions are confirmed by official results, Macron will be the first French president in 20 years to win a second term.

Mr Macron addressed his supporters in a speech in front of the Eiffel Tower following the announcement of the election, in which he acknowledged that many people had voted against him.

“The coming years will not be easy,” he said. “But they will be historic. With ambition and good will for our country – for all – I will be on your side to cope with the next five years. “

An investigation has been launched into an attempted “voluntary murder” after two people were killed

An investigation has been launched against “public officials” at the time when two people were fatally shot and killed in Pont Neuf, Paris.

They will be investigated for “attempted manslaughter”, according to AFP.

It is alleged that the shots fired at the people in the accelerating car were fired by a Heckler & Koch G36 police rifle.

A large police presence was spotted in the heart of the capital after the incident, when dead bodies covered with white sheets were removed from a Volkswagen sedan.

The Inspectorate General of the National Police, the supervisory body of the French police, is also expected to be deployed according to a protocol after the use of firearms by the officer.

Two people were shot dead and a third person, a woman, was seriously injured after a car crashed into them on the oldest bridge in the French capital, an investigating source told the AP.

The incident happened shortly after midnight, hours after French President Emmanuel Macron won a second term and protests erupted in the capital.

Votes Four out of 10 French voters who want to make a neo-fascist their president are no reason to celebrate

It takes some sense of perspective when peeking through the canal, writes Sean O’Grady.

Yes, France is saved, and so is Europe, thanks to the older generation of voters who voted for Emmanuel Macron.

Macron will accept his modest vote as a mandate to strengthen his political leadership in the European Union after Merkel: “More Europe”, as he calls it. By the way, it is not necessarily good news for the UK to see how the EU enjoys a sense of direction.

Paris police shot dead two people in a car

Paris police have shot dead two people and seriously injured a third man, a woman, after a car approached them on the oldest bridge in the French capital, an investigating source told the AP.

The incident happened shortly after midnight, hours after French President Emmanuel Macron won a second term and protests erupted in the capital.

However, there were no early indications of a connection to the presidential election or an act of terrorism.

“A car rushed to the police shortly after midnight and refused to stop,” said a source in the investigation.

“One of the officers opened fire, killing two people and wounding a third.”

It happened on the ancient bridge Pont Neuf, in the city center and in the early hours of Monday morning an investigating magistrate was present at the site, which was closed to traffic.

Police at the scene confirmed that the injured was a woman who was in the back of the car. Bullets fell into her hand and she was rushed to the hospital for “emergency treatment”.

The source said there was no backfire from the car.

Le Pen recognizes the election, but warns that Macron “will do nothing to fix the division” in France

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has said he will continue to fight Emmanuel Macron just as he acknowledged the defeat in the presidential election.

An Ipsos poll gave Macron 58.2% of the vote and Marin Le Pen 41.8%, a landslide victory despite doubts about the current president’s management of the economy and his ability to connect with voters, and despite lower-than-usual polling activity.

“I will continue to fight for France and the French people,” Ms Le Pen told her supporters in a provocative speech shortly after the exit poll was announced on Sunday night.

“I am afraid that the next five years will not break with the contempt and brutal policies of the last five years and Emmanuel Macron will do nothing to correct the divisions in our country.
