Representative Matt Goetz (R-Fla.) Condemned House Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) and House whip in the House Steve Scaliz (R-La.) On Tuesday after The New York Times published a report. which includes recorded comments from two congressmen expressing concern over the remarks of the Florida Republican following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Goetz called McCarthy and Scalis “weak men.”
“MP McCarthy and Representative Scaliz had views on President Trump and me, who shared in inciting conversations with Liz Cheney, not us,” Goetz wrote. “This is the behavior of weak men, not leaders.”
Earlier on Tuesday, the Times reported that McCarthy, in a conversation with Republican leadership on January 10, 2021, said Gaetz was “putting people in danger.” He was particularly concerned about the comments of the Florida Republican, who attacked the representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) After the January 6 riot, according to the Times.
“And he doesn’t need to do that. We saw what the people in the Capitol would do, you know, and these people came prepared with a rope, with everything else, “McCarthy said during the conversation while discussing Gaetz.
Scalise also expressed concern about Gaetz’s comments, suggesting the remarks may be illegal.
“These are serious things. It has to stop, “Scalis said. “What he’s doing is potentially illegal.”
Also during a Jan. 10 conversation, McCarthy condemned Republicans calling on their colleagues, saying he “must stop.”
“Those members who call other members, these things have to stop,” McCarthy said.
“The tension is too high. The country is too crazy. I don’t want to look back and think we did something. … I don’t want to play politics with any of this, “he added.
McCarthy said he had received a report on Gaetz calling on people to call them “anti-Trump,” adding that “these are serious things people are doing that they need to stop.”
Goetz said Tuesday that McCarthy and Scaliz “protect Liz Cheney from criticism” as he defends Trump from impeachment.
“They found it inflammatory or illegal to call Cheney and Kinzinger Anti-Trump, a label they both proudly advertise today,” he added.
The Florida Republican also suggested the new recordings illustrate the true thoughts of McCarthy and Scaliz.
“On the plus side, you no longer need to be a lobbyist with a $ 5,000 check to know what McCarthy and Scaliz really think. “You just have to listen to their own words as they belittle Trump and the Republicans in Congress who are fighting for him,” he said.
Hill turned to McCarthy and Scalis for comment.
The audio recordings, reported by the Times, were obtained for the upcoming book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for the Future of America”, written by Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, both reporters in the newspaper.
On Jan. 6, the committee considered a second call for McCarthy House to pass two bills in Alaska sponsored by the later representative. Don Young
Tuesday’s report was the second article to include McCarthy’s private comments since the Jan. 6 riot. In the first batch, McCarthy was heard saying he would recommend Trump resign. He initially called the report “completely false and erroneous”, but later audio recordings backed up the remarks.
Gaetz knocked out McCarthy on Twitter after the first report, again accusing him of “defending” Cheney.
