Gas prices have reached record levels across the country

Canadians in most parts of the country are waking up to higher gas prices today, with prices either above $ 2 a liter or approaching that benchmark.

According to Gas Wizard, a site that tracks gas prices in Canada, prices have jumped four to six cents in many urban centers across the country. In Vancouver, the price of regular gasoline reached $ 2.17.

Prairie prices remained unchanged on the last day.

“The average in Canada will come very close to that psychological barrier of $ 2 a liter, if you will. And it’s unlikely to end there any time soon,” said Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, CBC News.

Gas prices have risen rapidly over the past year, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exacerbating the trend. Last May, the average price of gas in Canada was $ 1.32.

McTeague said all Canadians are affected by rising fuel prices, whether they drive or not, given that the goods are transported in vehicles that rely on diesel.

Diesel prices are well over $ 2 in most parts of the country. In St. John’s, Nfld., The price of diesel is $ 2.73.

“Here we have a circumstance of this increased super inflation … energy bubble … starting to hit consumers worldwide in a way that could very well cause a global recession,” he said.

Rising gas prices are another way to shrink Canada’s budgets, as inflation peaked at a 31-year high of 6.7 percent last month.
