Gatwick Airport denies lack of staff after passenger dies on board | United Kingdom news

An investigation is under way into the death of a passenger at Gatwick Airport.

EasyJet confirmed the death in a statement, adding that cabin crew members provided medical assistance to the unnamed passenger while waiting for help from paramedics.

The airline said: “Many of our cabin crew provided medical assistance to a passenger at Gatwick Airport while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but unfortunately the passenger later died.

“Our thoughts are with family and friends at this difficult time.”

A spokesman for Gatwick Airport said the incident happened while airport officials were helping three passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) get off – the addition of staff shortages did not play a role in the incident.

The spokesman said: “This is a sad and tragic incident and our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased.

“A member of Wilson’s staff, James, was waiting for the plane to arrive and was in the process of disembarking the three PRM passengers when the incident occurred.

“Staff shortages are not a factor in this incident, as claimed. It is normal for an employee to take down three passengers who need help by taking them one by one the short distance to the waiting buggy.

“A formal investigation is currently underway and it would not be appropriate to comment further.
