Gun kills more children and teens in America than drugs or cancer, says New England Journal of Medicine Study

From 2020, more Americans between the ages of 1 and 19 die from guns each year than any other cause – including car accidents, drug overdoses and cancer – according to a study by The New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that more than 4,300 people under the age of 19 died from gunshots in 2020, up 29 percent from the previous year – and the figure is likely to rise. “In the last 40 years, and almost certainly before, this is the first time that gunshot wounds have surpassed children’s motor vehicle accidents,” the study said, adding that homicides outweighed suicides. Overall, gun deaths increased by 33 percent between 2019 and 2020 in all demographic groups. The study found that car crashes, once the biggest killer of children, have dropped dramatically in the last 20 years. “You can reduce injuries without banning weapons, just as everyone reduces the rate of motor vehicle accidents without banning cars,” the authors conclude.
