Harry and Megan ride in mini cars driven by children of Invictus Games before the opening ceremony | World news

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were taken by several children in mini cars at the Invictus Games in the Netherlands.

The couple made their first public appearance together in Europe after retiring as senior working royal members more than two years ago when they attended a reception on Friday.

Harry and Megan got into miniature open Land Rover cars driven by two little girls before the opening ceremony of the event in The Hague on Saturday.

Harry founded Invictus Games to help rehabilitate wounded or sick soldiers and veterans around the world by enabling them to compete in Paralympic-like sporting events.

The couple arrived at Zuiderpark around noon and seemed relaxed and calm as they talked to people.

They both wore sunglasses and met children on a small track next to the main drive and sat in the passenger compartment next to their young drivers.

Megan was driven by five-year-old French girl Mia Poirot, while Harry was driven by four-year-old Dutch girl Scarlett Vroegop.

The Duke also took part in the challenge of driving a Jaguar Land Rover, sitting in the front passenger seat and helping to navigate bridge structures, ramps and rocks.

Prior to Friday, the couple had not been seen in public on this side of the Atlantic since 2020.

Harry and Megan chose to make their first public appearance together at Invictus Games almost five years ago.

He and Megan moved to California after retiring from their royal duties in January 2020.

Their appearance at Zuiderpark came after visiting the Queen of Windsor on Thursday after arriving from the United States.

Harry and Megan’s travels to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands come after the couple was absent from the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service in London last month.

The couple is due to speak at the opening ceremony on Saturday night and address the audience at a televised event attended by members of the Dutch royal family and the country’s prime minister.

The ceremony will include live performances by performers, including Kaiser Chiefs.
