Harry Maguire suffered a double blow as it turned out that his season may have ended due to a knee injury, and the interim head of Manchester United Ralph Rannick offered to put his captain on re-election.
United’s growing list of injuries means that Rangnik have only 14 senior field players to choose from on Thursday’s clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Rangnik said Maguire’s knee problem was only “minor”, but Sportsmail realized it could protect him from United’s remaining four games.

This would be an appropriate end to a miserable season for the England defender, who is facing criticism for his form and questions about his suitability to remain as United’s captain.
Rangnik fueled the debate Wednesday when asked if he would recommend Maguire as captain to new manager Eric ten Haag.
“I strongly believe that the captain should be chosen by the team,” said Rangnik. “In Germany, we always had a board of four or five players chosen by the players.
Ralph Rangnik even suggested that the role of captain be re-elected next season
“I would do that if I remained manager next season, but I’m not. That’s something Eric will have to decide.
United will be in the market for central defender this summer, questioning the future of Maguire at Old Trafford just three years after moving from Leicester for £ 80 million.
Rangnik put the 29-year-old on the Arsenal bench on Saturday after he was threatened with bombing his family home if he did not leave United within 72 hours.
After Maguire joined Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Fred and Luke Shaw on the injured list, Rangnik acknowledged that he may need to include some young players on the team to face Chelsea.

Jaden Sancho also has tonsillitis, and Aaron One-Bisaka is facing a late fitness test.
“We currently have 14 of our professional team available and probably three or four young players will be part of the team,” said Rangnik.
After writing off United’s top four hopes, he acknowledged that it could be an “advantage” for Ten Hag not to play in the Europa League or the Europa League next season. However, Rangnik called on his players to be professional.
“It’s our job to try to get the best results possible and then see which position we end up in,” he said.

Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, believes Chelsea need only minor changes this summer, not the open heart surgery that Ranknik says Manchester United requires.
Asked what treatment Chelsea needed, Tuhel laughed: “Cosmetic surgery” as soon as we can act, we will try to turn things around and turn them from a disadvantage into an advantage.
“It’s not possible for a new owner to come in and say, ‘Blow, here’s £ 250 million – go and spend it.’
