About 13,000 additional mammogram images taken in the province in recent years will have to be reread after it was determined that the images were not read according to technical standards.
Last week, Central Health revealed that around 3,000 images will need to be re-read after it was found that the images were read at viewing stations using 3 megapixels instead of the standard 5 megapixels, which provide greater detail.
This has prompted other health authorities to conduct reviews of their monitoring stations to determine if there is a need to reread images.
Eastern, Western and Labrador-Grenfell Health provided an update on their preliminary reviews and found that around 13,000 images would need to be re-read.
Eastern Health and Labrador-Grenfell Health – whose mammograms are relied upon by Eastern Health – have identified approximately 3,000 images, each dating back three years. Western Health identified more than 7,500 images dating back to 2013 that required further review.
There was no immediate word on whether any changes had been detected. To date, discrepancies have been identified in four images in the Central Health Region.
