“He’s our hero”: The family pays tribute to a “naughty, funny and cheeky” teenager stabbed to death trying to protect his mother

The family of a teenager who was stabbed to death while trying to protect his mother paid a heartbreaking tribute to their “naughty, funny and cheeky boy.” Jakub Szymanski, 15, died at the hospital on Thursday night after being stabbed twice in Miles Platting.

Understandably, he intervened to protect his mother, Katarzyna Bastek, when a man launched an attack. Ms. Bastek, 40, was injured and is recovering in hospital. A 44-year-old man was arrested in Kent on Friday night on suspicion of murder, police said.

In a statement released by police, Jakub’s family said: “Jakub was known with love as Cuba to his family and Jakub to his friends. He was always a popular child, making friends wherever he went because of his friendly and talkative nature.

“He always said to himself what he thought, he was naughty, funny and cheeky boy. He loved his Xbox and football, he supported Manchester City.

“He was like any other teenager and was useful to so many people, even those he had just met. He is our hero to our family.

According to police, the suspect is known to the victims. Tonight (Saturday) he remains in custody for questioning.

Detectives are “working around the clock” after the incident on a property on Bednal Avenue. Investigations into the scene continued on Saturday, with GMP saying officers would be in the area all weekend.

Insp Chief Detective Alicia Smith, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “We are still continuing our investigation and last night’s arrest is a huge step in potentially providing the grieving family with the answers they so desperately need. A teenager who has tragically lost his life all his life in front of him, and not only is his mother mourning the loss of his son, but he is also recovering from what was undoubtedly extremely traumatic.

“However, we would like to hear from anyone who has any information, or anyone who may have seen something.

Friends have set up a fundraising page to support his family.
