Highway 11 closed in Orillia ‘for several hours’ after snapping water column: OPP

Traffic on Interstate 11 in Orillia was backed up Friday evening after police closed a section of the freeway in both directions due to downed power lines.

According to provincial police, a damaged hydro switch caught fire, causing the pole to snap into the northbound lanes south of Bay Park Road near Hampshire Mills Lane.

Traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes was diverted off the highway to allow crews to attend the scene.

Many drivers reported being stuck in a traffic nightmare for over an hour.

Hydro One crews were able to fix the problem and police reopened the highway several hours later.
