Hundreds of friends and family of Caranvir Sahota lined up in front of a funeral home in southern Edmonton on Sunday afternoon to pay their respects to the teenager he loved so much.
“It’s very difficult to see a young man who is so smart, so handsome, to be taken away like that. He hasn’t done anything wrong to anyone, because people have done something bad to him, “said family friend Jay Sahni.
The 16-year-old died in hospital after being attacked in front of McNally High School in Edmonton.

It was an emotional afternoon at the open funeral of the coffin, where no space was empty.
Pictures of Karanvir and his family were displayed, visitors placed rose petals in the coffin as they paid their respects, and family members gave speeches sharing fond memories.

“He was a responsible and caring older brother for his sister and cousin – he was a loving son of both parents,” said one guest.

Many of his friends gathered around the podium, noting that the teenager was a leader to whom many rose.
“No matter what Karan (vir) was doing, he was amazing in every job. “Wherever Karan is, he will always be in our hearts forever,” said another guest.

Mayor Amarjit Sohi also spoke at the funeral, offering his condolences to the family.
“Your loss is felt by the community, your loss is really a loss for this city, a loss for a potential young man who could grow up to come back to build a better city,” Sohi said.
A spiritual leader also spoke at the funeral, saying it was not a time for anger or revenge, while asking those present to take off their shoes for prayer.
Monica Bins, Karanvir’s cousin, said his parents were still in shock and struggling physically and emotionally. She added that the whole family is helping them in this difficult time.

After the funeral, prayers were said for Karanvir at a Sikh temple in Mill Woods.
A public candlelight vigil is scheduled for Friday night at 8 p.m., outside McNally High School.
