California’s population has shrunk by more than 100,000 in 2021, with the state declining for the second year in a row, officials said Monday.
The state attributes the decline in its population to reduced births and immigration and the increase in deaths and people moving to other countries.

Despite the decline, California remains the most populous state in the country with about 39 million inhabitants. By comparison, the second Texas is home to 29.5 million people.
California lost 117,552 people between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022, according to the state Treasury Department, returning its population to where it was in 2016.
And while the state is experiencing population declines in the first and second years of the pandemic, California has seen its population growth decline even before COVID-19 due to the aging of older generations, younger generations producing fewer children and more residents. departing for other states.

Previously, California was able to compensate for these population losses by having more births than deaths and accepting a significant number of immigrants. But in 2020, the state suffered thousands of deaths from the pandemic, and international immigration declined after the federal government imposed travel and visa restrictions in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus.
The state saw its population decline for the first time in the same year, which officials said was an emergency year caused by the global pandemic. However, figures released on Monday reveal that the state’s population decline continues in 2021, although the decline is smaller than in 2020.
Civil servants said the decline was due to a decline in international immigration, with only 43,000 people from other countries accumulating in 2021, compared to the average annual pre-pandemic of 140,000.
Some Republicans blame the number of people leaving the state for his democratic policies, as California has a Democratic governor and a Democratic-controlled state legislature.

About 280,000 more people left for other states in 2021 than moved to the golden state, but that number reflects a trend that has persisted for decades.
The downturn even cost them a seat in Congress for the first time after a U.S. census found that California’s population growth was lagging behind other states.
Only three of California’s coastal counties did not decline last year. Meanwhile, most of the state’s inland counties have seen steady growth.
