James Cordon has announced that he will retire as host of The Late Late Show in 2023, after extending his contract with CBS for the last year.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the extension of Cordon’s contract “will translate him into the 2022-23 season”, by which time he will leave The Late Late Show after an eight-year term as host. Cordon spoke directly to the news in an emotional monologue he delivered during a recording of the late-night CBS talk show on Thursday.
“This will be my last year hosting the show,” Cordon said. “When I started this journey, it would always be just that. Journey. Adventure. I have never seen it as my final destination. I never want this show to be in any way welcome. I always want to love doing this and I really think that in a year’s time it will be a good time to move on and see what else can be there. “

“We will not leave today. We have another year until the end, “he added. “We are all determined to make this the best year we’ve ever had to do this show. We will come out with a bang. There will be Carpools and Crosswalks, sketches and other surprises … and there will be tears. There will be so many tears because it was the hardest decision I ever had to make. “
Cordon became the frontman of The Late Late Show in 2015, taking over from former host Craig Ferguson. He launched the fourth iteration of the show with Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis, who were the first of many celebrities to take the stage. Corden also generates noise with segments such as Carpool Karaoke and Crosswalk the Musical.
“Seven years ago, James Cordon came to the United States and took over television with huge creative and comedic changes that resonated widely among viewers online and online,” CBS President and CEO George Cheeks said in a statement. From “Crosswalk the Musical” to the legendary “Carpool Karaoke” and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has really rethought many elements of the late-night format … We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend another season on The Late Late Show. “
Prior to his late-night housekeeping, Cordon co-wrote and starred in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, for which he won a BAFTA for Best Comedy Performance in 2008. He also appeared in several films, including Gulliver’s Travels, Into The Woods and Tom Hooper’s widely criticized film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
