Depp is suing Hurd, his ex-wife, for $ 50 million for a 2018 publication she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although Depp is not mentioned in the article, he claims that it costs him lucrative acting roles.
Both Hurd and Depp, who met in 2009 and were married from 2015-2016, accuse the other of acts of physical violence during their relationship. Both rejected the other’s allegations.
The trial, which began on April 11, is expected to last six weeks. Hurd has not yet testified.
Before returning to court on Monday, here’s a look at some of what happened last week in the trial.
Depp says he is a victim of domestic violence
Depp ended his fourth and final day of testimony in the trial on Monday. Jessica Meyer’s lawyer, Depp, released a recording of a conversation between the former couple in 2016, in which Hurd expressed concern about regaining his reputation after reports in the press of abuse in their relationship.
What you said in response when Mrs. Hurd said, “Tell the world, Johnny. Tell them, Johnny Depp, me, Johnny Depp, a man, and I’m a victim of domestic violence? ”Myers Depp asked.
“I said yes. It’s me, “Depp replied.
Sketches in the courtroom
Throughout the week, the former Pirates of the Caribbean star was seen scratching during the holidays.
At one point, Depp was seen painting with pink and purple markers. At another point, he drew a sketch on a piece of paper with a sticker and shared it with his lawyer.
“Strange” testimony
On Wednesday, Alejandro Romero, who worked as a janitor in the former apartment building of Depp and Hurd, gave recorded testimony from his car, in which at one point he was seen evaporating and driving.
Hurd’s lawyer called it “weird.”
Judge Penny Azkarate called the moment “first.”
“I just have to say I’ve never seen that before. I have seen many things, but I have never seen them, “said Judge Azkarate.
Depp’s former agent
In a recorded testimony played for the court, Depp’s former agent, Christian Carino, testified that he believed that Hurd’s allegations of domestic violence against Depp cost the actor future films about “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
“My opinion is that Amber’s accusations would have the most dramatic impact on his off-screen reputation. I’m not talking about any specific accusations,” Carino said.
Carino began representing Depp in October 2016 and at one point represented Depp and Hurd at the same time.
Hurd’s lawyer is pressuring Carino over other issues Depp may have had while working on previous Pirates films.
“I know he’s late, but he’s been late with everything in his life,” Carino said. “I think it’s worrying for everyone, but everyone has learned how to produce a film to deal with it.”
ACLU
Terrace Doherty, ACLU’s chief legal counsel, testified in recorded testimony released Thursday about the ACLU’s close involvement in drafting and setting up the Hurd-written article at the heart of Depp’s case.
Doherty said ACLU staff members wrote an initial draft of the piece for Hurd, which focused on raising awareness of gender-based violence. Hurd is the organization’s ambassador.
Doherty said he recalled numerous emails back and forth with ACLU staff and Hurd’s lawyers.
“They offered revisions to the document related to issues covered by the NDA (Hurd and Depp’s non-disclosure agreement),” Doherty said.
ACLU officials are working to publish the article in consultation with Hurd’s team, Doherty said, and that Hurd wants the song released immediately after Aquaman, a strategy the ACLU agreed to.
“From the ACLU’s point of view, Amber is about to receive an incredible amount of press and be in the public eye, so what better time than now to publish this article so as to generate a significant readership for our problems “Doherty said.”
Doherty also testified about donations received from or on behalf of Hurd after she publicly promised to donate her entire $ 7 million divorce from the Depp to charities, including the ACLU.
Doherty said Hurd agreed to pay the ACLU $ 3.5 million over several years. Hurd herself paid $ 350,000, Depp paid $ 100,000 on her behalf, $ 350,000 was paid by the Fidelity Foundation, advised by a donor on Hurd’s behalf, and that her ex-boyfriend, Elon Musk, paid $ 500,000 by a donor advised by the Vanhalff Foundation.
To date, Doherty has testified that she received $ 1.3 million from Hurd or on her behalf. Payments are suspended after 2019
Doherty said there was no indication that Hurd did not intend to pay the remainder of his promised donation.
