Johnny Depp’s lawyers are suspending their defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard

Depp is suing Hurd, his ex-wife, for allegedly slandering him in a 2018 article and causing him to lose his job in Hollywood.

Jurors heard more than two dozen witnesses called by Depp’s lawyers, including Depp himself. Many witnessed explosive battles between the two.

Minutes after Depp’s legal team dropped their case, Hurd’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the entire case, arguing that Depp had failed to prove his defamation case. The strike proposal is a common tactic and asked the judge to make an abbreviated decision.

Judge Penny Azkarate partially rejected the motion on two grounds, but said he would continue to consider another argument if evidence related to it was presented when Hurd’s team presented its case.

Hurd’s legal team began presenting its case Tuesday with testimony from psychologist Dawn Hughes.

Hughes has previously testified as an expert on violent relationships in trials against Nxivm founder Keith Ranier and singer R. Kelly, helping to secure both sentences.

Depp’s latest witness, court accountant Mike Spindler, testified on Tuesday about his analysis of the revenue Depp lost as a result of a 2018 article in which the actor was not mentioned by name.

“I concluded that Mr. Depp suffered lost profits of approximately $ 40 million,” Spindler said.
