Johnny Depp’s texts shown to jurors in a defamation case

Amber Heard’s lawyers worked Thursday to point out discrepancies in Johnny Depp’s testimony in the defamation lawsuit between the former married actors, presenting text messages sent by Mr. Depp and audio recordings of the couple’s arguments.

Ms. Hurd claims in court documents that Mr. Depp repeatedly attacked her during their marriage, including during a battle in 2015 in which she said he “pulled away” and hit her in the head. in the face, “hitting” her nose. Mr Depp testified that he never hit Ms Hurd during their relationship and accused her of being an aggressor.

Mr Depp said at the booth on Thursday that he strongly disagreed with hitting Mrs Hurd in the head that night, saying he was only trying to restrain her and that “it is not impossible to hit her”.

Faced with a recording in which he says, “I hit you in the forehead with your head,” using swear words and “It doesn’t break your nose,” Mr. Depp said he was trying to reassure Ms. Hurd by repeating her version of the events.

“There was no intentional blow to the head,” the actor said, “and if you want to have a calm conversation with Ms. Hurd, you may need to calm down a little.”

The trial in Fairfax County Court revolves around an article written by Ms. Hurd in 2018 for The Washington Post, in which she said she was “a public figure representing domestic violence.”

But the testimony of the trial goes beyond the analysis of what Mrs. Hurd wrote. It includes a long review of the physical quarrels between the actors, the various stories they have given to each, and an extensive review of drug and alcohol use by Mr Depp.

On Thursday, Ms. Hurd’s lawyer, Ben Rothenborn, recalled Mr. Depp recalling how he wrote bloody messages on the wall and other objects after part of his finger was cut off in 2015.

In his testimony, Mr Depp confirmed that he had written a message in the mirror with his injured finger, in which Mrs Hurd – then his wife – was “easy Amber” and another on a lampshade, which said: “Good luck and be careful on top.”

“I thought that was good advice,” Mr Depp said.

But what both sides disagree on is how Mr. Depp’s finger was cut off while the couple was in Australia for the filming of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Mr Depp testified that Mrs Hurd threw a handle with vodka, which broke on his arm and cut off his finger. In court documents, Ms. Hurd said he cut off his own finger when he smashed the phone to pieces amid an attack of physical violence against her.

Ms Hurd, who is suing Mr Depp for defamation after his former lawyer called the allegations a hoax, said in court documents that Mr Depp’s drug and alcohol use was central to the cycle of abuse. writes, “Johnny will become unstable and violent when under the influence of drugs and alcohol, then remorseful and apologetic when sober.”

Mr Depp testified on Tuesday that Ms. Hurd’s portrayal of his drug and alcohol use was “highly embellished” and that he had once been addicted to opioids but had successfully detoxified himself.

Parts of the cross-examination by Ms. Hurd’s lawyer tried to show that Mr. Depp misrepresented drug use.

Mr Rothenborn questioned Mr Depp about a specific incident in 2014 in which the actor’s account differed from that of Mrs Hurd. She wrote in court documents that Mr Depp had “drunk a lot” during a private flight and had thrown objects at her, shouted obscenely and kicked her in the back. He said he was angry about a romantic scene she shot with actor James Franco. She said he then locked himself in the plane’s bathroom and fainted, according to court documents.

Mr Depp testified on Wednesday that he had taken opioids and may have been drinking a glass of champagne during the flight, adding that he locked himself in the bathroom because Ms Hurd “was actively looking for a way to fight me”. Ms. Hurd said in court documents that she never hit Mr. Depp except in self-defense or in defense of her sister.

In the courtroom. A defamation lawsuit involving former married actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is currently pending in Fairfax County Court in Virginia. Here’s what you need to know about the case:

Ms. Hurd’s option. Mr Depp’s lawsuit came in response to a publication Ms. Hurd wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although she did not mention her ex-husband’s name, he and his lawyers say she apparently meant their relationship.

Allegations of domestic violence. In the 2020 trial, Ms. Hurd accused her ex-husband of assaulting her for the first time in 2013 after they began dating, and described in detail other cases in which he hit her, hit her in the head and he throws her to the ground. Mr Depp has since accused her of hitting, kicking and throwing objects at him.

Mr Rothenborn tried to speculate that Mr Depp’s behavior was more unstable than he had admitted, correcting him with a text message he had sent to a friend, actor Paul Bethany, about the flight. In the text, Mr. Depp shook up the exaggerated list of drugs and alcohol he had consumed, and said they had left him to “shout obscenities and insult” anyone who approached.

In response, Mr Depp suggested that there was some creativity in the way he spoke in the text messages.

“When I write a text, especially if I’m in a particularly passionate place, it’s a canvas, it’s a painting,” Mr Depp said. “You choose your colors.”

Mr Rothenborn questioned Mr Depp about the drugs he used and with whom, prompting the actor to say – in a comment that made the court laugh – “I once gave Marilyn Manson a pill to stop talking so much “.

During the cross-examination, Mr Depp was confronted with several text messages to others in which he referred to Ms Hurd using insults and obscene language, including calling her a “useless prostitute”.

Putting on and taking off a pair of tinted glasses to read the evidence, Mr. Depp sometimes seemed a little worried as Mr. Rothenborn interrupted his answers for a while, commenting at one point, “Well, I don’t feel like I’m wasting anyone’s time, sir.” . “

Ms. Hurd’s lawyers are scheduled to continue Mr. Depp’s cross-examination on Monday.
