Killian Mbape has ruled out the chance to join Real Madrid and will instead sign a new three-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain after months of speculation about his future. But his decision dreaded Spain, with La Liga quickly appealing, calling the deal “scandalous”.
The French striker called Florentino Perez on Saturday to announce his decision not to join La Liga, although he had positive talks with the Spanish champions only last week. Mbape is believed to have wanted to explain to the Real president why he chose to stay at his home club before appearing in the media.
The 23-year-old footballer – whose contract with PSG expires at the end of the season – has agreed on a profitable extension until 2025. Mbape and club president Nasser Al Kelaifi posed with the PSG shirt “Mbape 2025” before the last League 1 match of the season against Metz when the audience exploded when Al Kelaifi announced the news at the Parc des Princes.
“I have chosen to extend my contract with Paris Saint-Germain and I am very happy. “I am convinced that here I can continue to develop into a club that gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level,” he said in a statement from the club. “I am also very happy to be able to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, raised and prospered.”
However, his decision caused outrage in La Liga, which issued a strong statement on Saturday night, which reads: “It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which last season lost more than 220 million euros after accumulating losses of over € 700m in previous seasons [while reporting sponsorship income at a doubtful valuation] with sports staff costs around € 650 million for this 2021-22 season, may face an agreement on these characteristics, while those clubs that could accept the player’s arrival without seeing their payroll account compromised remain without to be able to sign it. ”
Mbape joined PSG Monaco in 2017 in a deal worth up to 180 million euros and established himself as one of the best players in the world.
PSG turned down several offers from Madrid for him last summer, the latest worth 200m euros on the day of the deadline. Mbape scored for PSG in both games in their defeat in the Champions League in Madrid this season.
