Kim Jong Un is watching new weapons tests to improve nuclear capabilities

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has witnessed the test launch of a new type of tactical guided weapon aimed at boosting the country’s nuclear capabilities, the northern state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday.

“The new tactical guided weapons system … is of great importance for drastically improving the firepower of long-range artillery units and increasing the efficiency of the DPRK’s tactical nuclear weapons,” KCNA said.

The DPRK means the official name of the North Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The KCNA did not say when the test took place, but state media in the North usually reported on the leader’s activities a day later.

The latest launch came less than a month after North Korea resumed tests of its intercontinental ballistic missiles for the first time since 2017. Officials in Seoul and Washington also say there are signs that it may resume nuclear weapons tests soon.
