Line of Duty “returns” for an explosive Christmas special season seven of three parts

Line of Duty will reportedly return with an explosive series climax after fans were left “disappointed” by the season six finale last year.

actress Vicky McClure also said she would love to reconnect with her co-stars.

Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compton and Ms McClure are said to be reprising their roles for a three-part BBC special, which could air as early as Christmas 2023.

The Sun reported that an insider said: “Viewers were unhappy with the end of series six and were clamoring for a more sensational conclusion – now [writer] Jed [Mercurio] can deliver that.

“The question is whether the man we were led to believe was H was really the villain AC-12 was after, or was he another enemy.

“The fact that they’re going to take the unusual step of doing three episodes instead of the usual six or seven is a reflection of how special this is to the show.”

The BBC contacted the Belfast Telegraph and said it would “not comment” on the rumours.

After the latest series, fans of the show took to social media in droves to share their disappointment.

The words ‘disappointing’ and ‘disappointed’ became relevant after officers from the police’s anti-corruption unit AC-12 discovered the identity of the elusive ‘fourth man’ who was conspiring with the organized crime group (OCG) was none other than , and the clumsy police officer Ian Buckels.

The disbelief that it could be him is compounded by the way he was only caught because of his repeated misspellings of the word “definitely”.

The detective was first introduced to viewers in series one as the SIO on the case of murdered businesswoman Jackie Laverty by then-Chief Inspector Derek Hilton.

He later became Detective Chief Inspector in series four before being promoted once more to Detective Superintendent in the final series.

Vicky McClure has admitted that all the show’s cast would “love” to reunite for another series, but hinted that co-star Martin Compston’s busy schedule could be a problem.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, the actress discussed the potential for the BBC drama to return.

Speaking on GMB, she said: “I talk to the lads all the time, we’d all love it, we’re all game – Martin’s in nine shows! It’s busy, I’m sure we’ll get there.

Ms McClure said she was in a “busy” Whatsapp chat with her Line of Duty co-stars, including Northern Irish actor Adrian Dunbar, who played Chief Ted Hastings.
