A North Carolina mother and her boyfriend were arrested on Saturday after the woman’s two young children were found unsuitable.

Jaria Noel and Amen Butler, both 21, have been charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault on children, police said.

The Rocky Mount Police Department responded to a call about two non-responding minors around 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Block 900 on Drew St., police said in a statement.

Paramedics transferred the two minors, who were 1 year and one month old, to UNC Nash Healthcare, where they were both pronounced dead.

Police arrested Noel and Butler later Saturday. Each received a $ 100,000 unsecured bond.

Police did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths. A PIO employee was not available for comment on Sunday night.

WRAL reported that the children were found in a parked car, but police did not confirm this on their own.

Police said their investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are possible once the forensic service has completed its report.
