LIVE: A19 reopens 10 hours after police crash in which Audi drove on the wrong side of the road

What Cleveland police said

A Cleveland police spokesman said:

A19 Southbound near Middlesbrough will remain closed this morning after a collision that occurred around 12:30 this morning. Police were chasing a black Audi in Middlesbrough when the vehicle slid in the wrong direction and collided with a Peugeot 208. The driver of the 208 was taken to hospital for treatment and the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The 31-year-old Audi driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drug trafficking and is in custody. Three other men, aged 37, 34 and 22, who were passengers in the car, were also arrested in connection with the incident.

A 39-year-old man, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to hospital with life-threatening leg injuries.

Referral will be made to the Independent Police Conduct Service following the clash, which is mandatory.

Deviations are provided for the A19 and drivers are asked to allow longer travel time if possible.
