“The final decision will be made early next week,” Dr Luc Boalo, the province’s interim director of public health, told a news conference on Thursday.
He added: “At the moment we do not see anything that could derail” the intention to recommend the abolition of the mandate of the masks on the 14th.
“We believe that by the beginning of next week we should be comfortable enough to offer the government (to remove) the obligation to wear a mask in public places.
Boalo said that even when the broad term is lifted, masks will still be required in public transport and in healthcare institutions and long-term care homes.
Quebec’s public health department will continue to recommend that people wear masks in public places.
Boalo said there was “good news” about the situation in the Quebec pandemic.

He said several indicators show that the situation is improving among the general population, as well as among vulnerable groups such as the elderly.
New hospitalizations are expected to continue to decline over the next two weeks, Boalo added.
“The sixth wave is about to be controlled and the peak is probably behind us,” he said.
However, many cases are still reported on a daily basis, proof that “the pandemic is not over,” Boalo added.
He noted that some people are reinfected soon after recovering from a previous infection with a different variant.
A reporter asked Boalo if he planned to reinstate the mask in the event of a seventh wave of COVID in the autumn.
In response, Boalo said his department could recommend that the government make masks mandatory again if an “emergency” necessitates such a move.

He added: “In essence, we do not know what will happen in the future. Will there be another option that will be very dangerous, that will be worse than the one we are currently experiencing? We just don’t know. “
Boalo said his department “does not want” to make masks mandatory again once the current term is abolished.
Instead, he said he would prefer to recommend masks and allow people to “assess their own risk and see if they want to” wear face covers.

Masks will continue to be required for access to cinemas, theaters and indoor events and for hospitals, Health Minister Roberto Speranza said, adding that the government intends to be cautious in removing other measures.
“We have decided to maintain for some time, at least until June 15, an element of caution that I believe is necessary,” Speranza said at an event organized by the Medical Union.
The government has previously said it will no longer need health certificates proving vaccination or recent coronavirus recovery to access a wide range of services, including restaurants, gyms and public transport.
Italy was the first western country to be affected by the disease and has so far registered 163,244 deaths, the eighth highest in the world.

Quebec originally planned to remove mandatory mask rules in mid-April, but delayed the change due to rising hospitalizations and the unexpectedly late flu season.
The sixth wave seems to be declining in Quebec.
As a sign that the worst of the sixth wave is over, a provincial government health research institute said yesterday that it expects hospitalization growth to slow over the next two weeks.
