Inside the Mariupol Theater, where hundreds were killed by Russian shelling
Vladimir Putin warned the West on Tuesday that attempts to isolate Moscow would fail, as he claimed the conflict in Ukraine was “noble”.
The Russian president said he had no doubt that Russia would achieve all its goals in Ukraine – a conflict he described as inevitable and important for Russia’s long-term defense. “His goals are absolutely clear and noble,” Putin said. “It is clear that we had no choice. That was the right decision. “
This comes as the West tries to investigate allegations that Russia used chemical weapons in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
Ukrainian officials said some people had shown symptoms of chemical poisoning, including respiratory failure. This comes after it was reported that Russian troops had deployed an unknown substance in the Black Sea port city.
Countries, including Britain, have warned the Kremlin that all options will be on the table if President Putin crosses that red line.

No more friends: Berlusconi condemns Putin for the war in Ukraine
The controversial friendship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi seems to have ended after more than two decades of mutual admiration, family holidays and shared political values.
Rumors that relations were becoming frosty were confirmed at a congress of Forza Italia in Rome on Saturday, when Berlusconi took the stage and uttered Putin’s name for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th.
“I cannot and do not want to hide the fact that I am deeply disappointed and saddened by Vladimir Putin’s behavior,” said the media mogul, a billionaire. “I met him 20 years ago and he always looked like a man of democracy and peace.”

The World Bank says it is preparing a $ 1.5 billion aid package for Ukraine
The World Bank is preparing a new $ 1.5 billion (£ 1.15 billion) support package for war-torn Ukraine, including a $ 1 billion payment from the Development Lender’s Fund to the poorest countries, the World Bank president said. David Malpas on Tuesday.
Speaking in Warsaw, Malpas said the package was activated by the approval on Monday of $ 1 billion in aid from the International Development Association, as well as a $ 100 million payment to neighboring Moldova.
In remarks ahead of spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund next week, Malpas said the bank’s support helped Ukraine provide critical services, including the payment of salaries to hospital workers, pensions and social programs. The aid comes in addition to about $ 923 million in fast-paying financing approved by the World Bank last month.

An expert in chemical weapons says more information is needed about Mariupol
A specialist in protection against chemical, biological and radiological weapons has called for caution over allegations that Russian troops may have used such weapons during an attack on the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.
Dan Casheta of the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) insisted there was still “scarce information” about what had happened. He said it was “legally difficult” to assess these situations from a distance, especially when relying mainly on second- or third-hand reports instead of evidence from the scene.
“We have no actual description of the alleged chemical,” he wrote in a long Twitter post, adding:
Is it dust, liquid spray, fog, gas, steam? does it smell Is there a color? “

Ukrainian mother and son are welcome in the house of the deputy
A Ukrainian mother and son who were staying with a British MP on one of the government’s Ukrainian refugee schemes have been made to feel at home, they told the BBC.
Anna Kolomiychuk and her son remain with North Norfolk Conservative MP Duncan Baker and his family.
The politician posted photos of Anna (back and third from the left) and her son Saint (front and center) settling in the UK.
Ms. Kolomiychuk said she was relieved to be safe, but worried about people like her husband, who is still in Ukraine.
“It is most difficult to see that there are people who do not believe that this is really happening, who think it is fake,” Ms Kolomiychuk told the BBC, adding:
“It’s real and no matter what the news says. We have families, friends who live in cities that have been bombed. “

Five of those killed in Russia’s war are “officers sent to command Putin’s troops in Ukraine”
More high-ranking Russian soldiers have been killed in the conflict, the Ukrainian military said after reports that about 20 per cent of those killed in the Kremlin war were officers.
The Ukrainian army has announced the deaths of Colonel Alexander Bespalov, who commands the 59th Guards Tank Regiment, and Lieutenant Colonel Vyacheslav Savinov, who worked in artillery intelligence, writes Rory Sullivan.
The Russian service of the BBC concluded that the officers represent one in five Russian losses on the battlefields in Ukraine. In a sample of 1,083 dead Russian soldiers, there are 31 majors and 155 soldiers, ranked between junior lieutenant and captain, the television operator said.

The WTO has lowered its forecast for world trade in 2022 due to the war between Russia and Ukraine
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has revised down its forecast for world trade growth this year from 4.7 to 3 percent due to the impact of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“The economic repercussions of this conflict will extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders,” Ngozi Okonjo-Iuela, director general of the WTO, told a news conference on Tuesday.
“It is now clear that the double blow of the pandemic and the war has disrupted supply chains, increased inflationary pressures and reduced expectations for growth in production and trade.
The Geneva-based body said world trade growth in 2023 is expected to be 3.4 per cent, noting that these estimates are less reliable than usual due to uncertainty about how long the conflict will last.
Okonjo-Iveala spoke to the media in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday

Nearly two-thirds of Ukraine’s 7.5 million children have fled their homes since the Russian invasion, the United Nations said
Nearly two-thirds of all Ukrainian children have been forced to flee their homes in the six weeks since the invasion of Russian forces, according to UNICEF.
The UN Children’s Agency said 4.8 million of the country’s 7.5 million children had been eradicated from the fighting, describing the scale of the resettlement as “quite incredible”.
The warning came as the latest figures provided by Ukraine to the Prosecutor General’s Office suggest that 183 children were killed and 342 injured during the conflict.
