London Park may be renamed Diane Abbott after a review of slavery

London’s Park, named after William Gladstone, could be renamed Diane Abbott Park as part of a Labor review of Labor by a Labor-led council in the capital.

Gladstone Park, in north-west London, was named after its former prime minister in 1899.

But now the name of the London park may change in 2022, after the Brent council asked students aged 5 to 13 to come up with a short list of rebranding ideas.

The name of the Hackney Labor MP, Ms. Abbott, is among the proposals, as are BAME Park, Multi-faith Park and Diversity Fields, according to The Telegraph.

The project aims to tackle “injustice, prejudice and racism” after the Black Lives Matter movement.

Brent’s council said Gladstone, who called slavery “the most heinous crime”, “a historical figure whose views on the slave trade are inappropriate.”

The council’s documents reveal that the students were shown a video message, according to the newspaper.

Dr Inge Dornan of Brunel University said: “The black community in Brent continues to be affected by inequalities.

“The council is talking to local people about what we can do to tackle injustice, prejudice and racism.

“As part of this, Brent residents have asked the council to consider renaming Gladstone Park. This is because the Gladstone family has historically been involved in the transatlantic slave trade.
