M25 updated as Just Stop Oil protesters head to gas stations – summary

Dozens of protesters marched on two M25 gas stations in Surrey today (Thursday, April 28th). More than 30 protesters from the Just Stop Oil group filled the gas stations in Clacket Lane and Cobham Services around 7 am.

Activists clung to the gas station’s pumps and drivers are currently unable to get fuel. Surrey police have confirmed that 35 people have been arrested so far.

Nathan McGovern, a 22-year-old Coventry student who works as part of Just Stop Oil, said: “The world’s most vulnerable are dying from a fossil fuel nightmare as our government proposes to drill more oil and gas. . I refuse to stand aside and watch the heat waves and the drought kill people all over the global South, and families in the UK are forced to choose between food and heating. If politicians and bureaucrats refuse to act, then ordinary people must do what they do not want to do. ”

Superintendent Graham Barnett said: “About 40 officers were involved in the Just Stop Oil protest group at Cobham and Clacket Lane Services earlier today. Police responded after reports that pumps are breaking down and that protesters are glued to pumps, vehicles and front signs.

“We believe that this has caused significant disruption to drivers trying to use the services and to the petrol stations themselves, which will also suffer a huge financial loss as a result of this activity.

“All the protesters have already been removed and 35 people are in custody. Both front yards have reopened, but unfortunately a large number of pumps have been damaged, which means they are not currently in use. However, the pumps for heavy vehicles were not targeted and are still open to truck drivers. “
